My dad is of the opinion that Nevada is vastly underrated in terms of beauty, that, in fact, it’s one of the most beautiful states in the country. He argues that, when most people think of Nevada, they think of Las Vegas, Reno, or the I-80 corridor. It turns out that Las Vegas and Reno are shitholes, and the whole reason they built I-80 where it was is because it’s the most boring part of the state. Outside of those places, there are mountains, canyons, vast playas, meadows with horses in them, all with no people in a space larger than many countries. It boggles the mind.
Maybe Nevada is the equivalent of the girl in the teen comedy who has a messy bun and glasses and everyone thinks is homely, but then when she lets her hair down and takes off her glasses, the whole world realizes she’s actually beautiful. Except that’s not entirely accurate, since Vegas and Reno are gaudy and trashy. Maybe it’s when the girl with the orange spray tan and the fake eyelashes takes all of her accoutrements off and everyone realizes, oh wait, you’re actually a really attractive person. Or maybe Nevada isn’t a girl at all. Maybe it’s just land.
